Periods 1 and 2
Utilize the resources available here to help you work SMARTER not HARDER!
Content
This English class maintains a high expectation of students. Higher-level thinking skills and application of these skills are required. There will be much emphasis on literature and writing in this course. Students will read and explore the thoughts, feelings, and actions of the men and women who created our American heritage. In addition, students will write effective research and position papers discussing the literature, genres, authors, movements, and trends in American literature. Effective use of MLA style research and documentation format will be essential throughout the school year.
Materials
Our goal is for every student in this class to succeed. Grading assignments, tests, etc. is the best method we have to measure students’ mastery of the material. As we get to know each other the first week, we will share our expectations and grading procedures on homework, writing assignments, tests, quizzes, and projects. Here are the average points and weight of the assignments:
Process
Homework/Classwork – 25%
Participation – 5% (There will be random notebook/planner checks weekly for participation points)
Product
Quizzes – 10%
Tests – 30%
Projects/Writing Assessments – 30%
* Summer Reading is 10% of 1st Quarter Grade
Late Assignments
Work turned in late will have points deducted. Generally we will deduct 5pts per day depending on the assignment. Please turn all work in if you can, even if it is late. A zero is devastating to an average! Take responsibility for this; we will not track you down for your work.
Absences
Please make an effort to find out from a classmate what material was missed or check the back wall/crate before seeing me. We would prefer make-up assignments such as quizzes or tests to be completed after school or during the 1-hour lunch.
